Understanding how twice-a-year Inclisiran therapy can transform cholesterol management, and the challenges facing adoption of this new drug

Image
For decades, cholesterol-lowering medications like statins have been the go-to solution for managing heart health. However, a newer, lesser-known drug promises to dramatically lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol with just two doses a year. Inclisiran, an innovative medication that claims to change the way we think about   cholesterol management , is said to be unlike traditional pills taken daily. It harnesses the power of gene silencing technology to target cholesterol production at its root – offering a novel approach for those struggling with high cholesterol, especially individuals with diabetes, coronary artery disease, or obesity. To understand the full scope of this medication – its effectiveness, risks, and who stands to benefit the most —  indianexpress.com  spoke to leading cardiologists, diabetologists, and endocrinologists. Their insights paint a fascinating picture of how Inclisiran could revolutionise treatment, particularly for high-risk ...

With or without skin: The best way to have peanuts is… As with any food, moderation is key

Image
Peanuts are a powerhouse of nutrition, but what is the best way to have them — with or without the peel? Before we dive into this question, let’s understand why we should have peanuts. Peanuts are a powerhouse of energy and essential nutrients the body needs for sustained energy, muscle repair, and overall well-being. “Packed with fibre, protein, and fat, peanuts help keep you feeling invigorated after a meal. They also provide an excellent dosage of essential minerals like folate and magnesium,” said Dr Vineet Rao, consultant, General Medicine, Jupiter Hospital,  Pune . Peanut shells are frequently discarded, even though they contain a wealth of minerals and bioactive substances that can significantly improve health. From a doctor’s perspective, consuming peanuts with thin reddish-brown skin is more beneficial. “Peanut  skins  have more to give than many people think, thanks to their strong antioxidant levels and high fiber content,” said Dr Rao. The peel is rich ...

How fast is your gut? The answer to this question is important to your health

Image
Many of us pay attention to the foods we’re putting in our bodies — asking ourselves whether they’re nutritious and healthy for us. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself how fast this food is moving through your gut? The answer to this question is actually really important, as the speed that food moves through your  digestive tract   affects your health and wellbeing in many ways. Once you’ve chewed up and swallowed your meal, this food begins its journey along the gastrointestinal tract – a long and winding pathway that begins at the mouth and ends at the anus. Along the way, it reaches specialist organs that churn and digest (stomach), absorb nutrients (small intestine) and absorb water and salts (large intestine). The movement of food through the digestive tract is known as gut motility. This process is partly controlled by the trillions of bacteria present in our gut. The gut microbiome is extremely important as these bacteria help develop our immune system and break d...

Labourers do not want to come and work in cities, laments L&T CMD

Image
Mobilisation of labour from villages and towns for infrastructure development in India’s cities is a problem, as labourers do not want to come and work in cities for various reasons, such as the direct benefit transfer and Jan Dhan schemes, said Larsen and Toubro (L&T) chairman and managing director S.N. Subrahmanyan on Tuesday (February 11, 2025). Speaking at the CII Mystic South Global Linkages Summit in Chennai, Mr. Subrahmanyan said India had a peculiar problem: the attrition of labourers happens roughly about three to four times a year. “This means, for employing 4,00,000 labourers, we employed 1.6 million labourers. We have a database of 4 million people with us, their names, their Jan Dhan bank account, their Aadhaar number, the village they come from, their skillsets. There is a site in the western part of the country, where I am supposed to mobilise 50,000 labourers. I need people, but they are not willing to come.”

Muslim community has rejected Waqf Bill: Owaisi

Image
AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday (February 3, 2025) said the  Waqf Amendment Bill , in its current form, will lead to social instability as it has been rejected by the Muslim community. Participating in the debate on the President's Address, Mr. Owaisi said that the Bill has been rejected by the entire Muslim community and its implementation would take this country back to the 1980s and early 1990s. "I am cautioning and warning this government - if you bring and make a Waqf law in the present form, it will be violation of Article 25, 26 and 14, it will lead to social instability in this country. It has been rejected by the entire Muslim community. No Waqf property will be left, nothing will be left," Mr. Owaisi said. "You want to make India 'Viksit Bharat', we want 'Viksit Bharat'. You want to take this country back to the '80s and early '90s, it will be your responsibility. Because, as a proud Indian Muslim, I will not lose an inch of ...

Freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram: An advocate of women’s education and quota based on strength of each caste

Image
Caste census has become a topical issue in Tamil Nadu. The ruling DMK is making a strong case for it and parties, like the PMK, are demanding caste-wise reservation. It turns out that freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram (VOC) had also been a strong advocate of reservation proportionate to the strength of each caste. While articulating the idea, he had echoed the views of the Justice Party, previously known as South Indian Liberal Federation. “He had advocated the idea at least since 1919. He spoke in favour of it at the Congress conference in Tirunelveli and in his presidential address at the Salem district conference in 1927,” says historian A.R. Venkatachalapathy and author of the book Swadeshi Steam: V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and the Battle against the British Maritime Empire. In Naan Yaar (Who Am I), expressing his views on various issues, he recommends reservation on the basis of the strength of each caste in the District Boards, the Legislative Assembly, government jobs, and pub...

Omar Abdullah’s pragmatism, Ruhullah Mehdi’s dissent, and National Conference’s balancing act

Image
When Omar Abdullah became the first elected Chief Minister (CM) of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), a restive region over which the Central government has extensive control, he realised that it would be a term filled with colossal challenges and confrontations. But it was not long before his elected administration could complete 100 days; he was put in a quandary, not by the Opposition, but from within his own party camp. On January 9, in an interview,  Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi , the Member of Parliament (MP) from Srinagar and senior leader of National Conference (NC) —the party that came to power in J&K after swaying the voters by its politics of recognition—said that Abdullah risked being seen as “Delhi’s representative in Kashmir” if he didn’t fight strongly for the rights that were snatched away from the people of J&K. The interview came just weeks after Kashmir witnessed a rare political showdown when Ruhullah descended on the Gupkar Roa...
